Assembly passes Telangana Panchayat Raj Bill, 2018

  • The Telangana Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed the Telangana Panchayat Raj Bill, 2018.
  • Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said the bill was aimed at making the gram panchayatis achieve prosperity, clean and green.

Railways announces 20,000 additional jobs, total job offers at 110,000

  • The railways will recruit 20,000 more people, in addition to filling up 90,000 vacancies announced earlier, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday.
  • The available vacancies have now been increased to 1,10,000 from previously 90,000.

Dope test made must for getting arms licence in Jalandhar

  • In a significant move, the district administration has made dope test mandatory for the applicants seeking fresh/renewed arms licence in Jalandhar. 
  • Giving details, the Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Varinder Kumar Sharma said the directions for the purpose had come from the state government.
  • He said the government would check the misuse of the licensed weapon by the drug addicts, thereby ensuring the safety and security of the people.

Goa govt revives controversial Regional Plan 2021

  • Nearly six years after it was put on hold due to protests, the Goa Regional Plan 2021 was revived today with the state government allowing construction activities, on case to case basis, on the lands notified as settlement, commercial, institutional and industrial zones.
  • Announcing the decision, Town and Country PlanningMinister Vijai Sardesai said the developmental activities would be allowed case-wise after following a proper procedure.

Vistara introduces male cabin crew

  • Vistara airline announced it has introduced its first male cabin crew as part of plans to be an “equal opportunity employer”. 
  • The crew took to the skies following the completion of a rigorous three-month safety and service training programme to the exacting standards of Tata and Singapore Airlines, the airline said in a statement. 

Goa HC directs immediate stoppage of ore transportation

  • In an interim order, the Bombay High Court today directed immediate suspension of transportation of minerals from the 88 mining leases in Goa whose operations were stopped by the Supreme Court last month.
  • The Goa government has allowed transportation of excavated ore from these mines, which is challenged by the NGO Goa Foundation before the high court.

RBI fines ICICI Bank Rs 58.9 crore for treasury violations

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has fined ICICI Bank Rs 58.9 crore for violating norms relating to sale of government securities from the held-to-maturity category of its bonds portfolio.
  • This is the highest penalty imposed by RBI on a bank for a single incident.

Mitchell Starc ruled out of IPL with stress fracture

  • Australia’s injury-prone fast bowler Mitchell Starc was on Friday ruled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League due to a stress fracture in his right leg, dealing a blow to the prospects of his franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders.
  • The pacer was also ruled out of the fourth and final Test against South Africa, which began in Johannesburg on Friday.

Karnataka enters semifinals of Santosh Trophy

  • Karnataka banked on forward S. Rajesh’s 74th-minute goal to beat Mizoram 1-0 and enter the Santosh Trophy semifinals on Wednesday.
  • In a last round Group B match at the Mohun Bagan ground, Karnataka toiled hard to find the winner and reach the last four as the group topper.

Russia to expel more than 150 western diplomats

  • Russia will expel at least 150 western diplomats and close the US consulate in St Petersburg in retaliation for similar actions taken this week by British allies angered at the alleged Kremlin role in the poisoning of an ex-spy on UK soil.
  • Sergei Lavrov, Russian foreign minister, announced the move on Thursday evening, saying he had summoned the US ambassador to detail the ejections.

PM Modi to address select diaspora event in London

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a scaled-down, invitation-only event in London on April 18 during his visit to the UK for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
  • The event, called Bharat Ki Baat, Sabke Saath,will be held at a venue in Westminster, organisers said, adding about 1,500 invitees will be selected by lottery after they register on a website created for the event.

Abiy Ahmed elected as chairman of Ethiopia’s ruling coalition

  • Ethiopia’s ruling coalition has elected Abiy Ahmed as its new chairman, according to state media.
  • The announcement on Tuesday by state broadcaster FANA means that Ahmed, who hails from the Oromo ethnic group, is now expected to succeed Hailemariam Desalegn as Ethiopia’s prime minister.

  • Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has realigned duties of his core senior team, announcing that Terry Myerson, Head of Windows and Devices Group (WDG), was leaving the company.
  • Myerson and the WDG team transformed Windows to create a secure, always up-to-date, modern operating system (OS).
