Padma-Winning Bengaluru Biologist Becomes India’s Principal Scientific Advisor

  • Krishnaswamy VijayRaghavan, one of India’s leading biologists, was appointed the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India on Monday.
  • The Bengaluru-based geneticist and development biologist had retired from his post as Secretary, Department of Biotechnology earlier this year.
  • VijayRaghavan takes over from nuclear scientist Rajagopala Chidambaram, who has served as PSA under three prime ministers since 2001.

India’s first insect museum opens in Tamil Nadu

  • A Rs 5 crore insect museum with the state-of-the-art amenities was unveiled by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswamy at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
  • The museum, established at a 6,691 sqft area, is fully dedicated to insects and claimed to be the first of its in the country.

NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission signs SOI with SAP Global

  • NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission on Tuesday announced the signing of a Statement of Intent (SOI) with SAP to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • As part of the SOI, SAP in 2018 will adopt 100 Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATL) for five years to nurture the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning among secondary school children across India.

Oram launches Tribes India e-commerce portal

  • Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram today launched ‘e-Tribes:Tribes India’, an initiative for digital commerce at Tribes India outlet at Mahadev Road. 
  • It included launch of e-commerce portal of TRIFED, www.tribesindia.com and M-commerce, android app ‘Tribes India’.

Google buys GIF platform Tenor to build up its image search engine

  • Google has acquired GIF platform Tenor, adding a library of animated images to its vast internet search engine.
  • The company said in a blog post on Tuesday that it’s purchasing Tenor for an undisclosed amount and plans to integrate GIFs into Google Images and Gboard, the company’s virtual keyboard.

Department of Posts launches Cool EMS Service between India and Japan

  • Ministry of Communications has launched the Cool EMS Service which will come into force from 29.03.2018. 
  • Cool EMS service is one-way service from Japan to India which allows customers in India to import Japanese food items for personal use which is allowed under Indian regulations.

  • David Warner has stepped down as captain of Indian Premier league team Sunrisers Hyderabad.
  • The decision comes in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal that has rocked the Australian cricket team on their tour of South Africa.

Steve Smith, David Warner slapped one-year bans by Cricket Australia, to miss IPL 2018

  • Steve Smith and David Warner, the disgraced captain and vice-captain of the Australian cricket team, have been banished from cricket for 12 months.
  • Cameron Bancroft, whose ball-tampering tactics during the Cape Town Test were exposed by TV cameras, has been handed a nine-month suspension. All players can challenge their bans.

ISSF Junior World Cup: Muskan Bhanwala wins 25m pistol gold

  • Muskan Bhanwala clinched the gold medal in women’s 25m pistol as India pipped China at the top of the pecking order in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Sydney on Wednesday.
  • The 16-year-old Indian bested China’s Qin Sihang and Thailand’s Kanyakorn Hirunphoem, who respectively took silver and bronze in the pistol event, the tournament’s penultimate on the final day.

India, US talk ways to tackle terrorism

  • Government representatives from India and the United States on Tuesday deliberated on the need of coordinated international efforts to counter threats by foreign militants, at the 15th meeting of the India-US Counter-Terrorism Joint Working Group in New Delhi.
  • The group discussed international and bilateral cooperation on justice, law enforcement and capacity building efforts to counter terrorism, the ministry of ex- ternal affairs said in a statement.

Myanmar parliament elects Suu Kyi loyalist Win Myint as president

  • Myanmar’s parliament on Wednesday elected Win Myint, a loyalist of Aung San Suu Kyi, as new president, while Suu Kyi retained her executive authority over the government.

  • Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma and shuttler PV Sindhu has been featured in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2018 list, which includes innovators and disruptors who are reshaping their industries and changing Asia for the better.
  • Olympic silver medalist P V Sindhu recently achieved a career-best ranking of World No 2. The 22-year-old clinched titles at Syed Modi GPG, India Open, Korea Open, besides finishing second at World championship, Hong Kong Open and Dubai Super Series Finals.
