How To Prepare Physic for IIT JEE (Mains and Advanced) – Beginners Guide

IIT JEE Physic Preparation Guide

Dreaming JEE is not an easy dream to Chase. Making it realize Physics is one subject where you need 100% control. JEE Physics not only requires intense study plan, it needs rigorous practice, proven strategy and focus on do’s and don’ts. One should know what to look out for while preparing Physics. Every Chapter be it Mechanics, Electrostatics, Optics or Waves needs different outlook to master the Chapter and Topics. After interacting with hunderds of students I found that there are ten questions about JEE Physics preparartion that generally bothers the aspirants. These are –

  • What capabilities an aspirant should inculcate to learn Methodical subject like Physics?
  • How to begin the preparation?
  • Is it ok to skip Genearal Physics portion?
  • For Physics, most of the students rigorously prepare Mechanics,Does that strategy work?
  • What steps are required to prepare for more theoretical topics like Properties of Matter,Heat and Thermodynamics?
  • To some Oscillation and waves attracts more due to simplicity of the subject, which approach proves fruitful in preparing this portion?
  • Electrostatics and electrodynamics are interconnected and sequential just like Mechanics,Can we adapt same strategy to tackle this portions?
  • The most fascinating and vast portion of Physics curriculum is Optics,How one can master this portion?
  • What are the key components to study Modern Physics,The darkest yet dearest portion of Physics curriculum?
  • How one could cover the whole syllabus in comprehensive manner with limited time availability?

Now let us take them one by one.

Q.) What capabilities an aspirant should inculcate to learn Methodical subject like Physics?

Ans. See Concepts,Laws and Constants are three basic pillars of Physics. Unlike any other subject Physics is best learned by doing,by solving problems,by applying the concepts you learned in theory. Thus for JEE physics one must have unmatched visualisation of concepts, cosistency about your goal,a perfect embedding of facts and data in memory, a good hand at the application part and mathematical tools.

Q.) How to begin the preparartion?

Ans. To begin with one requires some mathematical topics as helping tools to learn physics. These are – basic trigonometry formulae, theory of equations, basic curves and their equations, calculus, vectors and basic algebra.Being a JEE aspirant a sound grip over these topics helps a lot.

Q.) Is it ok to skip Genearal Physics portion?

Ans. According to me it is suggestive not to skip this portion as it contains important information regarding Units and their conversion,Dimensions ,Significant figures,Scientific Notations etc.and every year at least one question has been asked related to this part in Mains and Advanced.Basically this part gives an overview of all the chapters and Physics terminilogy in brief.

Q.) For Physics, most of the students rigorously prepare Mechanics,Does that strategy work?

Ans. As per my analysis this strategy does not hold good.Mechanics is the most student lovable portion of Physics and most time consuming while learning.Amongst all the chapters in this portion Rotational Mechanics is the most important one.Every year around 6-7 questions are expected from Mechanics part in both Mains and Advanced. Perfection in concepts of mechanics is must foe thorough understanding of chapters like Fluids,Elasticity,Gravitation,SHM,Waves and upto some extent Electristatics and Magnetism. Each and every problem of Mechanics is framed with millions of thoughts, hence it is advisable to sit with the problem for an hour, play with it,twist it,make mistakes try to correct them and again make new mistakes. In this way you may figure out many ways to solve it and might end up with the simplest way to do so.It is also recommended that “DO MECHANICS BUT DON’T OVER DO IT.”

Q.) What steps are required to prepare for more theoretical topics like Properties of Matter,Heat and Thermodynamics?

Ans. Basically Properties of Matter is comparatively easier and has few practical findings without analytical proofs. For example- Elasticity of Iron is more than that of Rubber etc. Most of the portion of this part incorporate a mechanical input so this part is considered as a subsidiary of Mechanics. On an average 1-2 questions are asked every year in Mains and Advanced from this part.Whereas Heat and Thermodynamics contain common chapters with Chemistry curriculum of class 11th.Due to this it is recommended to study this part in details to ease out the burden of Chemistry. Also nothing is governed in Thermodynamics by any universal static law rather everything is based upon human experiences. The frequency of question asked in Mains is minimum of 2-3 and atleast 4 questions in Advanced.

Q.) To some Oscillation and waves attracts more due to simplicity of the subject, which approach proves fruitful in preparing this portion?

Ans. Oscillation and Waves is the last chapter in your class 11th syllabus. The importance of this chapter lies in the fact that it works as the foundation for Wave Optics of class 12th.In the past three years around 5 questions each were asked in both Mains and Advanced based on this particular section. So just make firm grip over the basic terms, definitions and their applications to get maximum advantage from this part.

Q.) Electrostatics and electrodynamics are interconnected and sequential just like Mechanics,Can we adapt same strategy to tackle this portions?

Ans. According to my analysis the strategy is not entirely same as that for Mechanics. Here the three basic pillars to tackle this portion are Mechanics,Vectors and Calculus.About 7-8 questions were appeared in last 3 years cosecutively in Mains and 10 questions in Advanced. So stepwise conceptual understanding followed by consolidation through applications along with consistency and regularity are the basic requirements needed to capture this portion.

Q.) The most fascinating and vast portion of Physics curriculum is Optics,How one can master this portion?

Ans. Actually Optics consists of two parts namely Ray Optics and Wave Optics.Ray Optics is an individual isolated part, the problems of this part involve application of geometry. If your visualization is perfect then it is captured very easily. The Wave Optics on the other hand is the part which includes Real Physics in it,certain interesting physical phenomena like Resonance,Doppler’s Effect,YDSE are the key features of sound and light waves. The frequency of questions asked in Mains in the past three years based on Optics are 2-3 and 4 in Advanced.
