Reasons for the Emergence of Extremists

  • The leaders realized that the true nature of Britishers was exploitative.
  • Dissatisfaction with the achievements of Moderates.
  • Partition of Bengal (1905) by Curzon.
  • Existence of a militant school of thought and emergence of a trained leadership.
  • Prominent Extremist Leaders

Lala Lajpat Rai

  • He was a prominent nationalist leader who played an important role in India’s Struggle for freedom.
  • He earned the title of ‘Punjab Kesari’ or the lion of Punjab due to his extremist type of patriotism and potent vocalism against British rule.
  • Under the influence of Arya Samaj he founded National School at Lahore.
  • He founded the Hindu Orphan Relief Movement to keep the Christian missions from securing custody of these children.
  • Lala Lajpat Rai boycotted Simon Commisson and demonstrated against it at Lahore during which he was brutally assaulted by the police in lathi-charge, and died a few days later due to the injuries.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak

  • Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak was a scholar, mathematician, philosopher and uncompromising leader of extremists.
  • He laid the foundation for India’s independence by building his own defiance of British rule into a national movement.
  • He was influenced by Agarkar, Ranade and Naoroji.
  • Lokmanya Tilak launched two newspapers the Kesari (in Marathi) and the Maratha (in English). He was deported to Mandlay Jail for writing seditious articles.
  • He founded Home Rule League in 1914. He wrote Gita Rahasya.
  • He organised Ganpati Festival in 1893 and Shivaji festival inn 1895.
  • In 1916 he concluded the Lucknow Pact with Mohd. Ali Jinnah.
  • He gave slogan – ”Swaraj is my birth Right and I will have it”.

Bipin Chandra Pal

  • Bipin Chandra Pal discarded orthodox Hinduism and entered Brahmo Samaj and visited England and America.
  • He started published English weekly Newspaper New India. He led the Swadeshi Movement.
  • He carried movements namely Boycott, Swadeshi, National Education, Swaraj and the Passive Resistance.
  • He founded Vande Matram.
  • Sri Aurobindo referred to him as one of the mightiest prophets of Nationalism.

Sri Aurobindo Ghosh

  • Sri Aurobindo Ghosh was a great scholar, a national leader and a spiritual guru.
  • He attended his knowledge (both basic and higher) from United Kingdom.
  • He returned to India as a civil servant to the ‘Maharaja of State of Baroda’. He also worked for secret societies in Bengal and Maharashtra.
  • He started Bengali Daily Jugantar. He wrote seditious articles in Vande Matram. He was put to trial for Maniktalla bomb conspiracy case.
  • He moved to Pondicherry where he worked on human evolution through spiritual activities such as Internal Yoga.
  • Having chosen the mystical path for the rest of his life, he collaborated with people with similar purohits.
