E-way bill mandatory for inter-state movement of goods from April 1

  • Businesses and transporters moving goods worth over Rs 50,000 from one state to another will have to carry an electronic, or e-way bill from April 1.
  • Touted as an anti-evasion measure that would help boost tax collections by clamping down on trade that currently happens on cash basis, the e-way bill provision of the goods and services tax (GST) was first introduced on February 1.
  • However, its implementation was put on hold after the system developed glitches in generating permits. 

India receives maiden US LNG shipment at Dabhol

  • India received its first LNG cargo from the US under a long-term supply deal on Friday, when a ship carrying super-cooled natural gas arrived at Dabhol in Maharashtra.
  • A chartered ship, MV Meridian Spirit arrived at Dabhol after a 25 days voyage from Louisiana, state-owned gas utility GAIL India Ltd said in a press statement.
  • GAIL India has contracted 3.5 million tonnes per annum of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from US energy firm Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass liquefaction facility in Louisiana.

Nilgiri Mountains to have special trains running on its tracks from today

  • Nilgiri Mountain Railways started its new special train services from today till 24th June this year to cater to popular demand during summer holidays.
  • The Southern Railway has informed that the special services will be provided on Saturdays and Sundays during the period.

Shekhar Kapur to head the jury for 65th National Film Awards

  • Veteran director Shekhar Kapur has been appointed chairman of the central panel of the 65th National Film Awards.
  • The central panel comprises a chairperson and 10 other members, including five regional chairpersons who head the respective regional panels.

Long term capital gains tax to come into effect from April 1

  • Several Budget proposals, including the reintroduction of tax on long term capital gains (LTCG) exceeding Rs 1 lakh from sale of shares, will kick in from April 1, the beginning of 2018-19 financial year.
  • Besides, other tax proposals like reduced corporate tax of 25 per cent on businesses on a turnover of up to Rs 250 crore and a standard deduction of Rs 40,000 in lieu of transport allowance and medical reimbursement, will come into effect from Sunday.

Cabinet approves MoU between India and United Kingdom and Northern Ireland

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and United Kingdom and Northern Ireland regarding cooperation and Exchange of Information for the Purposes of Combating International Criminality and Tackling Serious Organised Crime.
  • The MoU will reinforce the collaboration in the field of security that will be mutually beneficial.

Defending champs Bengal set up Santosh Trophy final with Kerala

  • Defending champions Bengal beat Karnataka 2-0 on Friday at the Sailen Manna Stadium in Howrah to set up a title clash against Kerala in the Santosh Trophy 2018.
  • Skipper Jiten Murmu and Tirthankar Sarkar scored in the 57th and 90+2nd minutes respectively for the hosts.

Zverev rolls into Miami Open final, will battle Isner

  • German fourth seed Alexander Zverev beat Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 7-6(4) 6-2 on Friday to set up a Miami Open final showdown against big-serving American John Isner, who earlier overwhelmed Juan Martin del Potro.
  • Carreno Busta gave as good as he got in the opening set but Zverev took over the rest of the way, sprinting through a second set in which he dominated on serve and broke his 16th-seeded opponent twice.

Alex Hales to replace David Warner in Sunrisers Hyderabad

  • England batsman Alex Hales will replace banned Australian opener David Warner in the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad for the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League.
  • Hales was bought for his base price of ₹ 1 crore as a replacement for 31-year-old Warner, who was barred from taking part in IPL-2018 by the BCCI after Cricket Australia (CA) handed him a one-year ban for his role in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

India, Pakistan can take two-way trade to $30 bn if relations normalise said Indian Envoy

  • The Indian envoy in Lahore said Friday that both the countries need to shun violence and normalise relations in order to take the two-way trade to $ 30 billion from the present $ 5 billion.
  • Indian high commissioner to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria, addressing the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) here, also said that there is no better way of improving bilateral relations than mutually beneficial economic ties.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX launches 10 satellites, but $6 mn nose cone crashes

  • The private firm SpaceX on Friday said a partially-reused rocket successfully launched and deployed the latest group of satellites to upgrade communication networks for Virginia-based company Iridium.
  • “We have successful liftoff of the Falcon 9,” a SpaceX commentator said after the rocket roared off with a tail of fiery exhaust from Vandenberg US Air Force base in California.

China launches 2 satellites to boost navigation system serving countries along BRI project Indian envoy

  • China has successfully launched two satellites with a single rocket to strengthen its BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), which will serve countries along the ambitious Belt and Road Initiative by the end of this year.
  • The BRI, previously known as ‘One Belt, One Road’, seeks to build rail, maritime and road links from Asia to Europe and Africa in a revival of the ancient Silk Road trading routes.

NASA to send first mission to study ‘heart’ of Mars

  • NASA is all set to send the first-ever mission dedicated to exploring the deep interior of Mars, the US space agency said on March 30.
  • Scheduled to launch on May 5, InSight — a stationary lander — will also be the first NASA mission since the Apollo moon landings to place a seismometer, a device that measures quakes, on the soil of another planet.

Google doodle celebrates India’s first female doctor Anandi Gopal Joshi’s 153rd birthday

  • Google is commemorating the 153rd birth anniversary of India’s first female doctor, Anandi Gopal Joshi, through a doodle on its homepage.
  • The young physician was born as Yamuna on this day in Maharashtra in 1865.
