Permanent Indus Commission meet begins in Delhi

  • India and Pakistan went ahead with talks on the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) on Thursday despite an upsurge in tensions over LoC crossfire and allegations of harassment of diplomats in Delhi and Islamabad.
  • On Wednesday, sources in the Ministry of External Affairs sources said, “According to the treaty provisions, the 114th meeting of the Permanent Indus Commission (PIC) will take place in India on March 29-30, 2018 in New Delhi to hold technical deliberations on various issues.”

ISRO successfully launches GSAT-6A satellite

  • India’s latest communication satellite GSAT-6A was on Thursday launched onboard by Geosynchronous rocket GSLV-F08 from Sriharikota and successfully placed in the designated orbit.
  • ISRO Chairman K Sivan congratulated the scientists on the achievement and said that the satellite will provide S Band and C Band mobile communication facilities.

Assam CM directs swift filing of charge-sheet in crimes against women and children

  • Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today directed all SPs to ensure swift and correct filing of charge-sheet in all crimes against women and children so that justice can be given to the victims.
  • He gave the instruction while chairing a law and order meeting with Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) of all districts through video conferencing at his conference hall.

Niti Aayog launches baseline ranking of 115 aspirational districts

  • The NITI Aayog, on Wednesday, launched the baseline ranking for 115 aspirational districts based on 49 indicators across five sectors that include health and nutrition, education, agriculture and water resources, financial inclusion and skill development, and basic infrastructure. 
  • This would be followed by delta ranking of these districts from May 2018 based on their “incremental progress”, NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said at the launch.

New portal for pensioners launched

  • Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) on Wednesday launched a new portal through which EPFO pensioners will get the details of pension-related information.
  • The portal will assist users with details like pension payment order number, payment order details, passbook information and other related information.

Government of India and Asian Development Bank (ADB) sign $80 Million Loan Agreement

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India signed $80 million loan to help modernize technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions and improve the skills ecosystem in the State of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Shri Sameer Kumar Khare, Joint Secretary (Multilateral Institutions), Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, signed the loan agreement for the Government of India, and Mr. Kenichi Yokoyama, Country Director of ADB’s India Resident Mission, signed on behalf of ADB.

  • Following the ouster of David Warner as Sunrisers Hyderabad captain, the franchise has entrusted New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson with the task of leading the side in the IPL 2018 starting April 7.
  • In the wake of the ball tampering controversy, Warner, one of three Australians accused, had stepped down as captain of Sunrisers on Wednesday.

  • After suffering three successive defeats, the hosts produced a ruthless all-round show to trounce England by eight wickets in the last league match of the women’s T20 international tri-series at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday.
  • Smriti Mandhana slammed another half-century, her third in the tournament, as India romped home with many balls to spare.

  • Nobel peace laureate Malala Yousafzai returned to Pakistan on Thursday, officials said, in her first visit to her native country since she was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman six years ago for advocating education for girls.

North and South Korea agree to historic leaders’ summit in DMZ on April 27

  • North and South Korea will hold their first summit in more than a decade on April 27, Seoul officials said on Thursday after Kim Jong-un pledged his commitment to denuclearisation during a surprise trip to Beijing.
  • South Korean officials, who announced the date after high-level talks with their Northern counterparts, said the summit agenda would largely be the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and an improvement of inter-Korean relations.

Indu Bhushan appointed CEO of ‘Ayushman Bharat’ mission

  • Indu Bhushan was today appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Centre’s ambitious Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission (ABNHPM). 
  • Bhushan, the Director General of East Asia Department, Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila, Philippines, has been appointed to the post for a period of two years, an order issued by the personnel ministry said. 

Microsoft to work with 650 vendors in India to deploy AI solutions

  • Microsoft on Wednesday said it would work with 650 Indian vendors to deploy its Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions for improving and transforming Indian businesses across verticals.
  • The Indian arm of the US-based tech firm showcased its recent AI solutions at the event on “AI for all in India”, where its partners converged to drive the new disruptive technology.
