Govt extends guarantee of Rs 5,000 crore to IRFC bonds

  • The finance ministry has extended sovereign guarantee of Rs5,000 crore to Indian Railways Finance Corp.’s (IRFC) bonds to be sold to Life Insurance Corp. of India (LIC).
  • The move will allow the public sector undertaking to raise funds from LIC, which was delayed due to restrictions posed by Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) rules related to exposure limits.

Asia’s largest Tulip garden in Srinagar open to visitors

  • Asia’s largest Tulip garden on the banks of the iconic Dal lake in Srinagar opened to visitors on Sunday. 
  • Jammu and Kashmir Tourism minister Tasaduq Mufti and Floriculture minister Javed Mustafa Mir were among the first visitors for this season.

AAI signs MoU with Assam govt to develop villages in Kamrup

  • The Airport Authority of India (AAI) today signed an MoU with Assam government under its Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) initiative for sustainable development of human settlements at villages inKamrup district, an AAI statement said.
  • The AAI would provide financial assistance under its CSR initiative of Rs 4.58 crore for the Kamrup district as per the estimates prepared by the UNDP to improve the resilience of communities around Guwahati Airport.

Vodafone-Idea merger in final stages of approval, says telecom secretary

  • The proposal to merge Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, to create the country’s largest telecom company, is in the final stages of approval, telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan said on Tuesday.
  • The two companies last week announced the top deck for the the soon-to-be-merged entity, naming Balesh Sharma as the new CEO.

SWIFT introduces universal real-time payment tracking

  • From November, a unique end-to-end transaction reference will be included in all payment instructions carried between all 11,000 customers on SWIFT at all times, across more than 200 countries and territories.
  • The Tracker, which has been available since May 2017, enables banks that have signed up to the service to track their gpi payments in real-time. 
  • This will give gpi customers full end-to-end tracking of all their payment messages quickly and efficiently, bringing even greater transparency and cost reduction.

International Solar Alliance, India ink host country agreement

  • The ministry of external affairs (MEA) signed the host country agreement in New Delhi on Monday.
  • The agreement will give ISA a juridical personality and gives it power to contract, acquire and dispose of movable and immovable properties as well as to institute and defend legal proceedings.

Manu Bhaker, Anmol Jain win air pistol mixed gold in ISSF junior World Cup

  • Manu Bhaker and Anmol Jain secured India’s seventh gold medal in the ISSF junior World Cup by winning the mixed 10m air pistol event with a qualification world record in Sydney on Tuesday.
  • Genemat Sekhon bagged an individual bronze medal in the junior women’s skeet, shooting a 36 in the final.
  • In the mixed 10m air rifle event, 17-year-old Shreya Agrawal and 19-year-old Arjun Babuta completed the podium in third place, finishing with 432.8 points, while their country-mates Elavenil Valarivan Elavenil (18) and Tejas Krishna Prasad (20) finished fourth.

  • Australian cricketer Steve Smith has stepped down from his position of the captain of the Rajasthan Royals team.
  • He will be replaced by Indian opener Ajinkya Rahane.
  • The Indian Premier League franchise, which is making a comeback in the league after serving a two-year ban, confirmed the news in a statement on Monday.

India will provide 4 Mi-24 choppers to Kabul, says Afghan envoy

  • India will underwrite the delivery of four gunship helicopters by Belarus to Afghanistan ahead of the war-torn country’s spring fighting season, the second time New Delhi has supplied lethal military equipment to Kabul.
  • Afghanistan, Belarus and India inked a trilateral pact for the refurbished Mi-24 helicopters earlier this month, Afghan ambassador Shaida Abdali said in an interview on Monday.

World’s oldest city goes ‘wireless’

  • Eighty-six years after the city got electricity, overhead power cables in Varanasi are being dismantled after a project to lay underground lines over 16 sq-km has been finally completed. 
  • Work started in December 2015, and Piyush Goyal visited regularly to monitor the project and said it would be completed in a year though it had a two-year deadline.

  • Two Indian activists have been named among 20 finalists from across 53 member-countries for the Commonwealth Youth Awards 2018 for their work in the field of gender equality.
  • Mirnalini Dayal has been recognised for her work as a campaign leader for ‘Health Over Stigma’ and Yogesh Kumar as the founder of social enterprise Even Cargo.
