Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme – a Prandhanmantri Yojana

As the saying goes ‘If you educate a man, then you educate an individual but if you educate a female, you educate a generation’. As an example for this saying, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save girl child, educate a girl child) is a campaign by the Government of India to generate awareness and improve the efficiency of welfare services intended for girls. The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme was launched on 22 January 2015 by Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi.

The objectives of this schemes are to prevent gender biased sex selective elimination, ensure survival and protection of girl child and to ensure education for the girl child. It has been the target of fraudsters in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Bihar and Delhi.

A budgetary allocation of 100 Cr. has been made under the budget announcement for Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign and 100 Cr. will be mobilized from Plan Outlay of the Planned scheme ‘Care and Protection of Girl Child – A Multi Sectoral Action Plan’ for the 12th Plan. Additional resources can be mobilized through Corporate Social Responsibility at National & State levels. The estimated cost of the Scheme is 200 Cr.

Basically this scheme functions in two parts. The first one focuses on saving the girl child, the second part focuses on education for the girl child. For the implementation of this scheme, the government is first choosing the districts with lowest female sex ratio. So, under this scheme, the parents of the girl child must make the deposit and they can also continue the deposit until the girl turns 21. The fund gets matured when the girl turns 29. Or if the girl decides to get married anytime between the age of 18 – 29, the deposit automatically reaches the maturity and can be withdrawn by the girl.

The eligibility criteria to apply for this BBBP scheme is that the family should have a girl child and the family should open a Sukanya Samruddhi Account (SSA) in any of the bank.
The main benefit of this scheme is to equalize the facilities between the boys and the girls. It ensures the education of the girl child and also helps the parents to save the money for the girl child’s marriage. Tax saving is offered to the parents as well as the interest rate is the highest among all other kinds of savings. The amount accumulated in the account will be given only to the girl once she is eligible to withdraw the fund.

To apply for this scheme, the parents need to open an account in any supporting bank under SSA category. The account can be opened by filling a form. The documents that are required to be attached are the birth certificate of the girl child as well as the identity and address proof of the parents.

Through this wonderful step towards the upliftment of women, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi surely has a vision for the future of India. His main aim is to have a perfect sex ratio and to empower females by eliminating evils like female foeticide. Mr Modi is taking care of such issues by bringing forth such schemes and helping the nation paving a path towards a glorious future.
