Himachal Pradesh among top five states in bird diversity

  • With 311 varieties of birds spotted during the four-day Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) recently, the Himachal Pradesh is among the top five in the country in terms of avian diversity.
  • Neighbouring Uttarakhand is first with 365 bird species followed by Karnataka with 348, Maharashtra with 323 and Tamil Nadu is home to 320 bird varieties.
  • Principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife) RC Kang said birding was carried out in 11 districts of Himachal Pradesh from February 16 to 18.

The first International Exhibition of Graphic Prints ‘Print Biennale India 2018’ inaugurated in New Delhi

  • In keeping with its role as the country’s National Academy of Art, the Lalit Kala Akademi is hosting the first-ever International Print Biennale in the country with a record number of 17 countries taking part in it.
  • The first-ever International Exhibition of Graphic Prints ‘Print Biennale India 2018’ opened on Sunday, at the Rabindra Bhavan Galleries of the Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi.
  • The eminent Artist-Printmaker, Shri Shakti Barman was the Chief Guest.

PV Sindhu to be India’s flag-bearer at Gold Coast

  • Shuttler PV Sindhu has been given the honour of becoming the flag bearer for the Indian contingent at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast starting on April 4.
  • Sindhu was the obvious choice as she had bagged a silver medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Odisha signs MoU with British Council

  • The Odisha government today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the British Council to strengthen educational and cultural cooperation.
  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was present when Alan Gemmell OBE, Director British Council India signed the MoU with GB Reddy, OSD and Special Secretary of State Handicrafts Museum.
  • British High Commissioner to India Sir Dominic Asquith KCMG was also present.
  • The British Council will support the state governments “Mo School” (My School) initiative by contributing to the development of English language skills for learners and teachers including government-aided schools.

BSNL to invest Rs 4,300 crore for network expansion in 2018-19

  • State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will invest about Rs 4,300 crore to expand network in 2018-19, and another Rs 5,000-6,000 crore is likely to be the utilised for government telecom projects, according to a top official.
  • The investment of Rs 4,300 crore earmarked for BSNL’s own expansion will primarily go into strengthening the mobile network, upgrading broadband infrastructure and strengthening the core network, its chairman and managing director Anupam Shrivastava told.

Equitas Bank ties up with CSK, launches Yellow Army Savings Account

  • Equitas Small Finance Bank has launched a new ‘Yellow Army Savings Account’ to increase its customer base through its association with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), a franchise of the Indian Premium League (IPL).
  • The Chennai-based new entrant into the banking sector has joined the list of the companies that use IPL boom and their association with franchises to promote products.

Anish Bhanwala wins India’s 3rd individual gold in junior shooting World Cup

  • Shooter Anish Bhanwala secured India a third individual gold medal at the ISSF Junior World Cup when the 15-year-old finished atop the podium in men’s 25m rapid fire pistol.
  • Having qualified for the final with the highest score, Bhanwala prevailed over two of his India teammates Anhad Jawanda and Rajkanwar Singh Sandhu and three Chinese participants in the medal round.

Pankaj Advani retains Asian Billiards title

  • Pankaj Advani defended his Asian Billiards Championships title in style by demolishing his practice partner B Bhaskar 6-1 in the summit clash in yangon, Myanmar.
  • With this win, Advani remains the reigning Indian, Asian and world champion in billiards for 2017-18.

India U-16 boys win Hong Kong football tournament

  • India U-16 were crowned champions of the Jockey Cup, an international youth invitational football tournament, after defeating hosts Hong Kong 4-2 in the final on Sunday.

  • Martin Vizcarra, who until Friday morning served as Peru’s first vice president and ambassador to Canada, has been sworn in as the country’s new president.

  • Google on Monday commemorated the 45th anniversary of the Chipko movement with a doodle.
  • The doodle depicts four women bedecked in traditional attire, holding hands and forming a chain around a tree, with the fauna which are denizens of the forest portrayed as spectators to this scene of solidarity that is played out on a starry night. 

JS Rajput nominated India’s Representative to UNESCO’s Executive Board

  • The Government of India has decided to nominate Professor J S Rajput, former Director NCERT, as India’s representative to the Executive Board (EXB) of UNESCO.
  • Professor J S Rajput is an eminent educationist with rich experience in various fields including UNESCO.

Ahmedabad Airport Receives Award For ‘Most Improved Airport’

  • Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad has received the award for the ‘Most Improved Airport’ in the Asia Pacific region. 
  • Airport Service Quality awards 2017 were organised by the Airport Council International (ACI).
